While several books have been written on modern Theosophy — the ancient wisdom tradition that can be found in every great culture from earliest times to the present — none currently exist today in the form of Edward Abdill’s new title. Presenting his own interpretation of the basic Theosophical concepts established in the late nineteenth century by the brilliant mystic, H. P. Blavatsky, Abdill gives us perhaps the first simplified, straightforward written version of the esoteric system that for centuries has often been misunderstood. Through this concise, easy-to-read introduction to Theosophy, people of all faiths and religions can finally start to bridge the gap that is the realm between science and spirituality.

While not restating the whole tradition, this new release uses fresh, contemporary language relevant to people today, unlike that of the previous texts typically written in Victorian language. Putting strong emphasis on the need to have an open mind and an eager intellect, this book also stresses the importance of discovering Theosophical principles within ourselves and from the world around us; the need to experience truth rather than to merely believe or disbelieve what an author or doctrine says. Abdill relates the reader to the “kingdom of heaven” as Jesus taught in the scriptures and reminds us that the kingdom is not necessarily a place where we go when we die, but perhaps the spark of divinity within our own consciousness.

Drawing from more than fifty years of experience studying, researching, teaching, and working in Theosophy, Abdill imparts practical, day-to-day examples and illustrative stories detailing how we can live the ancient tradition in contemporary times. Where documented evidence is not available to support various Theosophical themes, Abdill provides exercises that, if practiced, may produce a joyful, enlightening experience able to convince anyone that it’s possible to awaken the principles of Theosophy within us.

This book is the perfect guiding tool for all those on the quest to self-discovery and self-transformation, filling the long-awaited need of insight into the theories and practices that are the backbone of ancient wisdom that most foundational literature on modern Theosophy leaves to be desired.

Spirit of Change

New Age Retailer Review

An amazing tour de force, as Ed so skillfully guides the reader-whether it be the serious student or the earnest inquirer-through the intricate mazes of theosophical thought from the beginnings of manifestation to the work of every individual aspiring to ascend the spiritual path. Grounding his exposition on the ageless wisdom tradition that H.P. Blavatsky summarized in three fundamental propositions, Ed speaks directly to both intellect and heart in today’s language, with none of the jargon so often shrouding metaphysical ideas. Throughout, one feels Ed is speaking not just of abstract principles, but of a living, breathing philosophy, eminently useful in daily life, a worldview that is both a seeing of the way things are and a being (or way of living) that is consonant with that vision. Here indeed is Theosophy for the 21st century!
—Joy Mills, Former National President, The Theosophical Society in America; Former Director, Krotona Institute School of Theosophy

In this timely and timeless book, Edward Abdill plumbs the depths of the perennial wisdom that is the foundation of the spiritual path of Theosophy. With clarity and vision, he simplifies difficult and profound ideas using the power and beauty of story. He points out that when we ask “why?” about the purpose of life, modern science cannot help us. Its focus is the physical world of objects. There is no such thing as a “consciousness meter” or “mindalyzer” we can use to detect or measure consciousness. To explore the inner realms, we need a very different kind of science-a “science of spirit.” And, with great intelligence and sensitivity, that’s what Mr. Abdill outlines for us in The Secret Gateway. Step through that “gateway,” and chances are your life will never be the same.
—Christian de Quincey, Ph.D., Professor of Consciousness Studies, John F. Kennedy University; co-founder, The Visionary Edge media network; author, Radical Nature and Radical Knowing

The author has turned simplicity into an art form in his overview of Helena Blavatsky's "Secret Doctrine." He explains and illustrates theosophical principles with a masterly lucidity throughout, reducing the metaphysics of space and time, causality, field theory, the structures of consciousness and much more into their most basic and easily understood elements. The result is a rich experience for the beginner and the afficianado alike: a notable achievement.
—Victoria LePage, author, Shambhala: The Fascinating Truth behind the Myth of Shangri-La

The Secret Gateway is the kind of book I was always looking for as Editor for Quest Books. It is a lucid presentation in contemporary terms of the ancient wisdom and the spiritual path. It is both lofty and down to earth--lofty in its treatment of the grand cosmic principles that uphold the universe and ourselves, and down to earth in its real-life analogies and practical applications that ground it in experience. The Secret Gateway can bring one closer to understanding and union with that inner self that is one with all selves.
—Shirley J. Nicholson, former Editor, Quest Books; author of Ancient Wisdom -- Modern Insight and The Seven Human Powers

Theosophy wants to know. It is always asking questions. Why suffering? Who are we? Where are we going and how do we get there? The answers may be open-ended, but the longest journey begins with a single step. In The Secret Gateway, Ed Abdill opens the gate by asking the right questions, steps us through it, and then walks with us down the road. This clear, entertaining, and highly readable introduction to basic Theosophy is a journey you'll want to take with him.
—Robert Ellwood, Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Religion, University of Southern California; author of Theosophy: A Modern Expression of the Wisdom of the Ages

Ed Abdill first learned about Theosophy from the instructor of his two-year Spanish college course. Ed went on to earn a Phi Beta Kappa degree in English and a Masters Degree in Latin American Studies from NYU, which subsequently led to a Spanish teaching profession in New York. Seemingly destined to devote his future to Theosophy, the New York Theosophical Society hired Ed to manage their Quest Bookshop after he spent three years teaching Spanish. He managed the bookstore for the next 15 years, during which time he also served six years on the National Board of Directors of the Theosophical Society in America, and as President of the New York Theosophical Society for about nine years. Since 1980, Ed Abdill has been one of the national speakers for the Theosophical Society in America, lecturing in several other countries, including Australia, Brazil, England, and New Zealand.
